MBEKTN

The Modern Built Environment Knowledge Transfer Network (MBE KTN) is a single, national, over-arching knowledge transfer network for the built environment.

It aims to stimulate increased innovation and support its effective implementation in the modern built environment. The MBE KTN works with its members to:

  • identify industry challenges;
  • showcase potential innovations;
  • broker new collaborations;
  • facilitate access to funding opportunities; and
  • help members connect with each other.

    It is currently concentrating on five key themes and working with leading industry players to establish where innovation can add real value to the built environment.

    Energy Efficiency
    Energy demand and supply is heavily influenced by the built environment. Buildings are responsible for around half of all energy consumed in the UK and nearly fifty per cent of all carbon dioxide emissions.

    Climate Change Impact
    Our climate is changing. We are experiencing warmer, wetter weather with a higher incidence of extreme weather conditions. This is placing new challenges and strains on our built environment.

    Life Extension and Refurbishment
    The UK’s infrastructure and building stock is very old and is operating well beyond the design life commonly applied to new and replacement structures, however mass replacement is simply not an option. Working within the confines of an existing structure presents a range of challenges that are not present in new build structures.

    Intelligent Buildings and Infrastructure
    Digital communications have the potential to revolutionise way in which our buildings and infrastructure are designed, procured, built, managed and perform.
